Mavis Acquah

Mavis Acquah is a dutch recording artist/DJ, born in Amsterdam and named after American gospel singer and civil rights activist Mavis Staples. Having a father from Ghana and a mother from Indonesia, she's the product of a unique blend of cultures. As a very young child she discovered the power of expressing herself through dance and music. Inspired by artists like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Prince and Teddy Riley she developed her distinct R'n'B sound and started to perform as a singer throughout grammar school. After finishing lawschool at the Radboud University of Nijmegen Mavis attended the Joop van den Ende 'Lion King School'. The young lioness came to realize she was more an artist then a (musical) actress and it was time to follow her own path.

Mavis started off her artist career as a singer and MC sharing the stage with big names in the dance industry such as Afrojack, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, Laid Back Luke, Gregor Salto, Lucas & Steve, Sidney Samson, Frankie Rizardo, Leroy Styles, Roog and Kraak & Smaak. She shared the stage with renowned artists like Candy Dulfer, Berget Lewis and Alain Clark. She's the perfect combination of someone who entertains and hypes up the crowd but also adds a musical dimension to the DJ-set. In 2009 Mavis wrote the club hit “Step By Step” which was produced by Gregor Salto and Laidback Luke. It caused a great wave and hit the American charts. Many more featuring tracks followed like 'Count On Me' with Gregor Salto, 'Communication Breakdown' with Hardsoul and 'The Harder We Fight' with Susanne Alt.

Let’s not forget Mavis’ experience as a backing vocalist. She performed with international artists like Katie Melua, Michael Bubble and Enrique Iglesias.

In 2012 Mavis' passion for songwriting resulted in a team-up with writer/composer Gijs Huijs. Together they formed songwriting team The Rise. Which lead to their release of 'Come Get It' on the Enormous Tunes Label and their debut EP 'The Rise'. They've had several releases like 'Hold me Now' with SirOJ, 'Trust' with Tank & Cheetah on Mixmash Label, 'Recognize' with Team Rush Hour, 'You & I' together with Hardsoul and Ill Phill and 'Words' with Ferreck Dawn on Spinning Label.

Now Mavis is connecting the dots, creating the perfect mix of her African roots and musical influences. 'I feel strongly connected to Afro-infused pop and Afrohouse music. It's a puzzle coming together and therefor it inspires and empowers me.' On stage she's a one man band, pumping infectious Afro-Beats while infusing it with her soulful vocals and catchy MC-ing. A perfect combination of all her talents and experiences over the years.

She's currently working on new upcoming songs, all Afro Beat and Pop related.

If you ask Mavis to name a highlight she says: ‘The greatest compliment I ever received was from a couple who claimed that they have never experienced so much good energy during a performance. They felt totally recharged and said they could skip their therapy sessions for the coming six months….haha… I love to share my energy with others. Whether it’s very subtle like during an unplugged performance or very intense and dynamic as it can get in front of thousands of clubbers. To receive that energy back from your audience is such an amazing experience.’
